We all learn in our own ways – some by reading texts and repeating aloud what they have learnt, others by listening and repeating words and phrases, and some perhaps by writing down everything down they have learnt. Regardless of your learning style, one thing is absolutely essential when it comes to learning a new language: Learning pronunciation! Health and social care staff must be able to talk to clients and understand what they are saying, which is why practicing speaking and correct pronunciation in the language being studied is so important.
MEDI Connection language training – what you will learn
In MEDI Connection’s language training, we practice speaking: during lessons, the teacher speaks in both English and Finnish, and students also get to speak Finnish in an encouraging and non-judgmental atmosphere. Students are encouraged to learn Finnish pronunciation and verbal interaction. In addition to lessons, we offer discussion meetings where students have the opportunity to talk to a Finnish person in Finnish about everyday things.
Language maintenance training is also available for those who already speak some Finnish but want to improve their Finnish language skills. Our language training also includes plenty of written exercises on various topics, including both healthcare-related language exercises and more general vocabulary, for example, about nature and everyday situations. It is good to be able to talk to customers and colleagues about more than just healthcare-related issues, which is why we offer you the tools to learn and master the Finnish language in various everyday situations. Understanding Finnish customs, culture and traditions will also help you settle in Finland and understand the ways of living and communicating in your new home country.

Finnish Grammar
In our training, you will get to practice Finnish grammar, too. Although Finnish may seem like a difficult language, Finnish grammar is quite regular – for example, nouns and personal pronouns are always gender-neutral! The conjugation of verbs is most commonly regular in Finnish, with a few exceptions.
Finnish pronunciation – easy or difficult?
Finnish pronunciation is easy after you learn the rules of it – the alphabet is always pronounced the same way, and unlike in English, for example, you never have to guess how to pronounce a word!
Perhaps the most difficult thing about the Finnish language is learning different suffixes, which Finnish schoolchildren and even adults can sometimes struggle with!
Courage to speak
As with all language learning, it is good to remember to be merciful to yourself when learning Finnish – after all, language skills do constantly develop, and even if you feel you are not advancing as fast as you would like, the courage to use the foreign language you are learning, regardless of current level is the best way to become more fluent – and with good practice, you will bring your language skills forward on a weekly or even daily basis. No one is born a blacksmith, as the Finnish proverb says. Is there a similar saying in your native language?
